Negombo or Meegamuwa in Sinhalese is a major city in Sri Lanka, situated on the west coast and at the mouth of the Negombo Lagoon in Western Province. The Name Negombo comes from Portuguese which is a corrupted name of Tamil word Neerkolombu.Meegamuwa name from Sinhalese comes as the "village with Honey".Negombo is a beach town and its located just 10 kilometers from Bandaranayaka International Airport and it’s the first destination with sandy and beautiful beaches that you will meet right after you arrive in Sri Lanka at Bandaranayaka International Ariport.
Negombo has stash of decent hotels and restaurants and friendly local community.Negombo is also a fishing village with large Christian community.Negombo has influences of Portuguese and Dutch and has number of colonial buildings in the area. Negombo was one of the most important sources of cinnamon during the Dutch era, and there are still reminders of the European days. The busy center of Negombo town lies to the west of the bus and train stations. Most places to stay, however, line the main road that heads north from the town center, with the beachside hotel strip starting about 2km north of town.
