Pidurangala is a missive rock formation that is located few miles to north of Sigiriya. Pidurangala has an equally majestic view as the former of rolling lake-and-land vistas. Short of viewing it through drone footage, the summit of Pidurangala is also the best possible place to get an eyeful the rock fortress itself. It's not merely all about stunning views though.

Sigiriya and Pidurangala has two interlocked history .It is said that when King Kasyapa was building Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the 5th century, he moved monks living around Sigiriya to a new monastery on Pidurangala Rock and then refurbished and expanded the monastery under his patronage. The stupa to the left of the temple entrance is believed to mark the spot where King Kasyapa was cremated. Pidurangala is an ancient place and it is said that climbing Pidurangala is more challenging than Climbing Sigiriya. where Sigiriya is all stairs, Pidurangala has what you could call two levels; stone steps at the first, and then boulders and more boulders to climb over after that, constituting the second.

Comparing to Sigiriya rock the price to visit Pidurangala is more cheaper, both for locals and non-locals.There are brick worked cells and they are used by the meditating monks and there is a cell that with a giant reclining Buddha statue.

If you are fit and adventurous it is a climb worth making. It will take you around two hours.Take your time, rest often and drink lots of water. Proper footwear is strongly advised. The best times to climb are early morning and late afternoon. Once you finally reach the top of Pidurangala Rock you will be greeted by a magnificent vista similar to that from the top of Sigiriya. Viewed from almost any angle Sigiriya looms majestically. You can even see people climbing the stairs to the top of Sigiriya. On the highest point of Pidurangala Rock is a pile of rubble which is the remains of a stupa.
